Bringing a new pet home? Here are 4 Tips from Pet Parents

Fortunately, the world has grown comfortable enough to address, acknowledge and work on a person’s mental health and normalized the need for emotional companion. Inferring from pet adoption numbers this year, we have turned to our cutie-patooties for help (great call!). If you have done the hard part of getting your parents and partners to come around, let us prepare you well enough to bring a lovely addition to the family. We may have a parental tone through the blog, but we are with you and cannot appreciate you enough for embarking on this journey.

Are you ready?

All of us could use some love and hugs, and who can do that well than a furball who can summon oxytocin as they please. Yet, the responsibility that comes with having a pet at home is real. The house should be in a place to provide for the critter financially and emotionally (you will be a parent, after all). So, the first pro tip is - Don't rush the process. It is okay to take your time to analyze the situation at hand.

Do your research

Everyone has a type and would prefer to be associated with their kind - who matches their vibe and lifestyle. It applies to pets as well - they are your animal tribe. Jot down your expectations, what sets you off, your pet peeves, and communicate when you go for the adoption. While we are at it, we cannot stress the importance of adoption. If you are from Chennai, head down to Blue Cross spend some time with the pets before bringing one or even two (we are an ambitious lot) home. If your resources permit, do consider adopting the less fortunate pets. The love and companionship factor will be just the same, if not more!

Know their history

It is essential to know your critter’s medical history, physical and behavioural requirements when you bring them home. A trip to the veterinarian’s office is recommended. Here are a few questions to ask the doctor -

  • Is the critter’s weight on the healthy side?
  • How much and what sort of exercise is ideal for them?
  • What should be their feeding schedule? How often and what type of food is recommended?
  • What should they be vaccinated for and their schedule?
  • Are the pet’s teeth hale?

Congratulations! You brought an adorable companion home. Now what?

It is going to be a fun ride with the champ by your side. If you find it a tad bit overwhelming, consider this. Consider this, you got a big promotion and move to a new city and have to live around strangers. It would take a little bit of time to adapt to the new environment. Cut yourselves and the new one a little slack and give it some time. We are pretty sure that even the accidents are going to make funny tales down the lane. It takes a little bit of compromise and a lot of compassion on both ends to make any relationship work.

We are going to try being your Google Keep and give you a few reminders -

  • Be sure to take your critters outdoors and let them sweat it. This way, you get to watch them chase butterflies and converse with fellow naughties on the road.
  • Potty training by designating a specific space to do their business – this tip is actually for you than them.
  • Treats can help your critter know they are rewarded for “being a gooboi” but be sure to refrain. We are allowed to gulp our chips and chocolates down, but they are not. Watch out for judgemental eyes, though!
  • Remove their food bowls after they finish eating. Fixing a definite time for their feed is good practice.
  • Keep them hydrated! Leave the water bowl in a specific area so they can get to it when required.
  • Equip your house with all essentials. We have linked every product you may need when you bring a lil' one home. Explore and spoil your pets!
